WLI Monument, Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, SC
32.815622, -79.948809
This monument was erected to honor the memory and accomplishments of Colonel William Washington, whose actions in leading his cavalry during the Revolutionary War did much to drive the British from the South. Some of the many battles and skirmishes in which he participated: Harlem Heights; Trenton (where he was wounded); Cowpens; Hobkirk’s Hill; and Eutaw Springs (where he was again wounded). He survived the war to remain in South Carolina where he married Miss Jane Elliott, became a planter, and later served in the South Carolina Legislature.
